Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Facilities - Hood, VA.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the med Naltrexone, that is available via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Hood which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the drug-free life you want.
