Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Facilities - Mc Clure, VA.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the medication Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who intends to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Mc Clure that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the drug-free life you want.
