The armed forces currently uses a military insurance called Tricare to help veterans, active military members and their families receive health benefits. There is Tricare Prime, Tricare Standard, and Tricare Extra. Tricare Standard provides insurance benefits for retirees of the military who are 60 or older and their eligible family members. With Tricare Standard they go to any civilian health care provider that is payable under Tricare, but also pay an annual deductible and coinsurance, in addition to any out-of-pocket expenses. Tricare Extra is available to Tricare Standard beneficiaries which grants access to non-military health care professionals within their provider network, with a reduced coinsurance amount. Tricare Prime is available to all active-duty members, retirees, and all eligible family members, and with this they can pick a primary doctor and get referrals to health care services that provide specialty care.
Through TRICARE, members of the military can receive drug and alcohol treatment services in Newport News. This includes individual and group therapy including family therapy, detoxification, and other rehab services. They will require pre-authorization for services and there will most likely be some limitations. Military insurance pays for both outpatient and inpatient, but stays for detox are restricted to no more than 7 days. Partial hospitalization or impatient treatment following detox will only be authorized if it is an approved facility, and there are time limits as to how long military insurance carriers will be allowed to remain in rehab. A 3-week inpatient stay per benefit period is typically accepted. In additional to this, there are 60 group therapy sessions and 15 family therapy sessions covered per benefit period, which take place on an outpatient basis. Family therapy is covered one after the active military member has finished other rehabilitation services such as outpatient or inpatient treatment.
