Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Facilities - Orange, VA.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the med Naltrexone, that is available through injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who intends to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a treatment program in Orange that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
