Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Facilities - Parrott, VA.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, which is available via injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a person who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a treatment program in Parrott that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
