American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to need recovery services for substance abuse and addiction. Reversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are also more likely to seek treatment on their own will more than other racial/ethnic groups. Roughly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native substance abuse treatment admissions arrive to rehab as criminal justice clients, which means they have most likely accepted a diversion option to go to treatment instead of jail times for their charges. So therefore, there is a definite need for different types of treatment programs to provide services for all of the very unique requirements of American Indian or Alaska Natives, including addiction rehabilitation programs in native languages.
