Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - Rawlings, VA.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, which is available via injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, an individual who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a treatment program in Rawlings that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the drug-free life you want.
