Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Programs - Reston, VA.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the med Naltrexone, which one can get via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a person who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a rehab program in Reston which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the drug-free life you want.
