Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Centers - Richardsville, VA.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, an individual who plans to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Richardsville which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you build the sober life you want.
