The armed forces currently uses a military insurance called Tricare to help veterans, active military members and their families obtain health benefits. There is Tricare Prime, Tricare Standard, and Tricare Extra. Tricare Standard provides benefits for retirees of the military who are 60 years of age or older and their eligible family members. With Tricare Standard they go to any non-military health care provider that is payable under Tricare, but also pay an annual deductible and coinsurance, in addition to any out-of-pocket expenses. Tricare Extra is an option available to Tricare Standard beneficiaries which grants access to civilian health care providers within their provider network, with a discounted coinsurance amount. Tricare Prime is available to all active-duty members, retirees, and all eligible family members, and with this they can choose a primary doctor and get referrals to health care services that provide specialty care.
By way of TRICARE, military members can obtain substance abuse treatment services in Salem. This encompasses detoxification, individual and group therapy including family therapy, and other various rehab services. They will require pre-authorization for treatment and there are likely to be some limitations. Military insurance pays for both inpatient and outpatient, but stays for detoxification are limited to 7 days. An inpatient or partial hospitalization following detox will only be authorized if it is a Tricare approved treatment center, and there are time limits as to how long military members will be allowed to remain in treatment. A 3-week inpatient stay per benefit period is usually accepted. Additionally, there are 15 family therapy sessions and 60 group therapy sessions covered per benefit period, which take place on an outpatient basis. Family therapy is covered one after the active military member has finished other primary rehabilitation services such as outpatient or inpatient treatment.
