Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Facilities - Speedwell, VA.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, that is available through a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, a client who intends to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Speedwell that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
