Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Facilities - Sutherlin, VA.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get via a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, a client who plans to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Sutherlin which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
