American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to need recovery services for drug and alcohol abuse and addiction. On the Contrary, American Indians and Alaska Natives are more likely to seek treatment on their own will more than other racial/ethnic groups. Nearly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native drug and alcohol treatment admissions show up to rehab as criminal justice clients, meaning they have very likely agreed to a court ordered diversion program to go to rehab in lieu of jail time. So as one can see, there is a definite need for a variety of service types to provide services for all of the various requirements of American Indian or Alaska Natives, including addiction treatment services in native languages.
