Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Centers - Warsaw, VA.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get through injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who plans to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Warsaw which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the sober life you want.
