Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Centers - White Stone, VA.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the med Naltrexone, that is available via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, a client who plans to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in White Stone which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you live the sober life you want.
