Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Programs - Brookfield, VT.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, which is available via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who plans to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Brookfield which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the drug-free life you want.
