Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Centers - East Corinth, VT.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in East Corinth which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
