Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Centers - Glover, VT.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a client who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Glover which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
