Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Facilities - Granby, VT.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get through injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, an individual who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Granby which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
