Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Montgomery Center, VT.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, which is available via a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who plans to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Montgomery Center that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
