Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Facilities - Vernon, VT.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, that is available through injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, someone who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Vernon which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
