Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Waterbury Center, VT.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get via a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, someone who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Waterbury Center that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the drug-free life you want.
