Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Centers - Westminster, VT.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the medication Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a rehab program in Westminster which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
