American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to require rehabilitation for drug and alcohol abuse and addiction. Nearly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native substance abuse treatment admissions show up to treatment as criminal justice clients, meaning they have very likely accepted a court ordered diversion program to receive treatment instead of jail time. So therefore, there is an absolute need for different types of treatment programs to provide services for all of the very unique requirements of American Indian or Alaska Natives, including addiction treatment programs in native languages.
One of the barriers that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Index face is access to effective treatment facilities, particularly those who live in rural locations. Programs providing substance abuse treatment services in rural regions commonly are not set up to provide strategic planning aimed at meeting the needs and demands of this distinctive demographic including substance abuse rehabilitation services in their native language.
