American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to require treatment for substance abuse and addiction. On the Contrary, American Indians and Alaska Natives are also more likely to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Almost 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native addiction treatment admissions arrive to treatment as criminal justice clients, meaning they have most likely agreed to a court ordered diversion program to go to rehab in lieu of jail times for their charges. So as you can see, there is an absolute need for a variety of service types to provide services for all of the various needs of American Indian or Alaska Natives, including substance abuse treatment services in native languages.
