American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to need treatment for drug and alcohol abuse and addiction. Conversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are also more prone to seek treatment on their own will more than other racial/ethnic groups. Almost 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native substance abuse treatment admissions arrive to rehab as criminal justice clients, which means they have very likely agreed to a diversion option to receive rehab instead of jail times for their charges. So therefore, there is a definite need for a variety of service types to cover all of the various requirements of this client demographic, including addiction treatment services in native languages.
One of the challenges that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Bancroft face is access to effective rehab programs, particularly those who reside in rural locations. Programs providing substance abuse rehabilitation services in rural areas often are not set up to provide support aimed at meeting the needs and demands of this unique demographic including addiction rehabilitation services in their language. There have been numerous grants offered in recent years to cover these types of treatment services for American and Alaska Native clients, which have very effective programs which offer evidence based treatment that also incorporates culturally sensitive recovery services including those in their language which are performed by bi-lingual staff members.
