American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to require treatment for substance abuse and addiction. Reversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are also more prone to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Roughly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native addiction treatment admissions show up to treatment as criminal justice clients, which means they have most likely agreed to a diversion option to go to rehab in lieu of jail times for their charges. So therefore, there is an absolute need for a variety of service types to cover all of the very unique needs of this client demographic, including addiction treatment programs in native languages.
