American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to need treatment for drug and alcohol abuse and addiction. Conversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are more likely to seek treatment on their own will more than other racial/ethnic groups. Almost 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native substance abuse treatment admissions show up to treatment as criminal justice clients, which means they have most likely agreed to a diversion option to receive treatment in lieu of jail times for their charges. So therefore, there is an absolute need for a variety of service types to cover all of the various needs of this client demographic, including substance abuse treatment services in native languages.
One of the barriers that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Grand View face is access to effective services, especially those who reside in rural regions. Programs providing addiction rehabilitation services in rural areas often are not capable of offering support aimed at meeting the needs of this special group of people including substance abuse treatment services in their native language. American Indian and Alaska Native clients can work with elders and stakeholders involved in mental health services for their region or tribe to figure out which types of treatment services are an option for them and through which treatment facilities, and which ones will work best for their particular situation.
