American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to need recovery services for substance abuse and addiction. On the Contrary, American Indians and Alaska Natives are more likely to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Nearly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native drug and alcohol treatment admissions show up to rehab as criminal justice clients, meaning they have very likely agreed to a court ordered diversion program to receive rehab instead of jail time. So as one can see, there is a definite need for different types of treatment programs to cover all of the very unique needs of American Indian or Alaska Natives, including addiction treatment services in native languages.
One of the barriers that American Indian and Alaska Natives in New Glarus face is access to comprehensive and effective services, particularly those who live in secluded regions. Programs providing addiction treatment services in rural regions often are not set up to provide support intended for the needs and demands of this unique group of people including substance abuse rehabilitation services in their language. American Indian and Alaska Native people can work with stakeholders and elders working in mental health services for their tribe or region to figure out which services are available to them and through which treatment facilities, and which will best suit their needs. There have been many grants offered in recent years to help pay for these types of treatment services for American and Alaska Native clients, which have very effective recovery programs which provide evidence based treatment that also integrates culturally sensitive treatment services including those in their language which are performed by bi-lingual treatment staff, medical staff, etc.
