American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to require recovery services for drug and alcohol abuse and addiction. Conversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are more prone to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Almost 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native drug and alcohol treatment admissions arrive to rehab as criminal justice clients, meaning they have most likely accepted a diversion option to go to treatment in lieu of jail time. So as one can see, there is a definite need for different types of treatment programs to cover all of the very unique requirements of American Indian or Alaska Natives, including addiction rehabilitation programs in native languages.
One of the problems that American Indian and Alaska Natives in North Prairie face is access to effective treatment facilities, particularly those who reside in secluded regions. Facilities providing addiction rehabilitation services in rural regions may not be able to offer strategic planning aimed at meeting the needs and demands of this unique demographic including addiction rehabilitation services in their native language. American Indian and Alaska Native people can work with stakeholders and elders working in mental health services for their region or tribe to determine which treatment services are an option for them and through which treatment facilities, and which ones will work best for their particular situation. There have been numerous grants offered in recent years to help pay for these types of treatment services for American and Alaska Native clients, which have very effective recovery programs which provide evidence based treatment that also encompasses culturally sensitive rehab services including those in their language which are performed by bi-lingual treatment staff, medical staff, etc.
