American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to need treatment for drug and alcohol abuse and addiction. Reversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are more likely to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Roughly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native substance abuse treatment admissions arrive to rehab as criminal justice clients, which means they have most likely agreed to a court ordered diversion program to receive rehab instead of jail times for their charges. So as you can see, there is definitely a need for different types of treatment programs to cover all of the very unique needs of this client demographic, including addiction rehabilitation programs in native languages.
One of the problems that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Ontario face is access to comprehensive and effective treatment facilities, especially those who live in secluded locations. Programs offering drug and alcohol treatment services in rural areas often are not capable of offering support aimed at meeting the needs and demands of this special group of people including addiction treatment services in their language. American Indian and Alaska Native clients can consult with elders and stakeholders working in mental health services for their tribe or region to determine which types of treatment services are available to them and through which facilities, and which ones will best suit their needs. There have been numerous grants approved in recent years to help pay for these types of treatment services for American and Alaska Native clients, which have very effective recovery programs which provide evidence based treatment that also integrates culturally sensitive rehab services delivered in their language which are provided by bi-lingual staff members.
