Buprenorphine Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Programs - Ontario, WI.

Buprenorphine is utilized in what is known as medication assisted treatment (MAT) for people in Ontario who are dependent to opoids such as prescription pain killers or heroin. Unlike Methadone which is also used in medication assisted treatment but is usually only dispensed in highly structured clinics, Buprenorphine may be prescribed and dispensed in doctor's offices which gives easier access to this form of treatment.

When Buprenorphine is used in recovery it can help someone who is going through the intense withdrawal symptoms and cravings brought on by opiate withdrawal. Buprenorphine works to manage and reduce these withdrawal symptoms so that the person can easier detox and stay off drugs as well as not engage in typical drug seeking behaviors. When the medication assisted treatment idea was first conceived and perpetuated, it wasn't intended to be a stand-alone activity but rather only part of a "whole-patient" treatment plan that would ideally involve actual rehabilitation for opioid dependency and addiction recovery. Buprenorphine use would only be one component of a bigger comprehensive plan.

Buprenorphine will also cause the euphoric "high" associated with other opiates so it can be abused. For this reason it is highly suggested that anyone choosing medication assisted treatment as the recovery plan they prefer to take, to also work with professional addiction counselors to integrate other forms of behavioral therapy & counseling and self-help programs into their plan of recovery to ensure they are not at risk of relapse.
