American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to be in need to treatment for substance abuse and addiction. Reversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are also more likely to seek treatment on their own will more than other racial/ethnic groups. Roughly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native drug and alcohol treatment admissions show up to rehab as criminal justice clients, meaning they have very likely accepted a court ordered diversion program to go to rehab in lieu of jail time. So as one can see, there is a definite need for different types of treatment programs to provide services for all of the various requirements of this client demographic, including addiction treatment services in native languages.
One of the barriers that American Indian and Alaska Natives in St. Germain face is access to effective treatment facilities, especially those who reside in secluded areas.
