Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Programs - Anmoore, WV.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, which is available via injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Anmoore which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you build the sober life you want.
