Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Centers - Ballard, WV.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, that is available through a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who plans to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Ballard which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
