Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Programs - Big Bend, WV.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, that is available through a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, a person who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Big Bend which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you build the drug-free life you want.
