Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Facilities - Capon Springs, WV.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get through a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are particular safety measures that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, a client who plans to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Capon Springs which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the sober life you want.
