Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Programs - Dawes, WV.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, that is available through injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Dawes which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the drug-free life you want.
