Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Grant Town, WV.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, which is available via injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, a person who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a rehab program in Grant Town that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the drug-free life you want.
