Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - Iaeger, WV.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get through a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, a client who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Iaeger which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the sober life you want.
