Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Programs - Pinch, WV.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the med Naltrexone, which one can get through a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, a person who plans to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Pinch which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
