Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Facilities - Verner, WV.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get via injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, an individual who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Verner that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the sober life you want.
