Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - Wayne, WV.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, that is available via a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, an individual who plans to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a treatment program in Wayne which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
