One of the outpatient rehab alternatives for people in Bedford who are battling with opioid dependence and addiction is opioid maintenance therapy. Licensed clinics and doctors are certified to give certain medications to opioid dependent people, many of which are opioid-based themselves and are addiction. With low amounts however, the user doesn't feel high and also does not have intense cravings and is not in opioid withdrawal. Methadone is the first medication used for this purpose, but there are other options currently to select from.

Methadone is an opioid and can be taken at an out-patient medical center certified to administer the drug, that is taken on a daily basis as a pill or liquid. The price of the drug is about one hundred and fifty dolloars a month. Buprenorphine is also an opiate based med, and is in pill form often taken one day on, one day off. But unlike Methadone that is only be dispensed in well-regulated clinics, Buprenorphine can be prescribed and dispensed in doctor's offices. The price monthly of buprenorphine is approximately three hundred dollars per month for the generic version of the drug. There is also a version of buprenorphine that contains naloxone, which is a drug which reverses the effects of opioids. Someone taking this version of the drug, also known as Suboxone, would find it more difficult to get high from opioids if they relapsed while taking the drug. It too is taken on a daily basis, and costs about $450 a month. Naltrexone is another medication taken in opioid maintenance therapy, but unlike the other drugs aforementioned it's an opioid blocker and isn't an opioid. There is an option to take this medication as a monthly injection, and that is called Vivitrol. As an opioid blocker, it prevents a person from experience high feelings from opioids, and therefore lowers the risk associated with relapse. This daily injection costs anywhere from $1000 to $1200 a month.
