American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to require treatment for substance abuse and addiction. Reversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are more likely to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Nearly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native substance abuse treatment admissions arrive to rehab as criminal justice clients, which means they have very likely accepted a diversion option to go to treatment in lieu of jail times for their charges. So as one can see, there is an absolute need for different types of treatment programs to provide services for all of the various requirements of American Indian or Alaska Natives, including addiction treatment services in native languages.
One of the problems that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Dixon face is access to effective treatment facilities, particularly those who reside in rural regions. Programs offering drug and alcohol rehab services in rural areas often are not set up to provide support intended for the needs and demands of this distinctive group of people including addiction rehabilitation services in their language.
