One of the out-patient rehab options for people in Anchorage who are battling with opioid dependence and addiction is opioid maintenance therapy. Licensed clinics and doctors are authorized to administer specific medications to opioid dependent people, many of which are opioids also and are addiction. In low enough doses however, the user doesn't experience being high but also doesn't have acute cravings and is not in opioid withdrawal. Methadone is the first med used for this reason, but there are alternative options currently to pick from.
Methadone is an opiate and can be taken at an out-patient clinic certified to administer the med, that is taken daily as a pill or liquid. The cost of the med is approximately $150 monthly. Buprenorphine is also an opiate based med, and is in pill form often taken every other day. But different from Methadone that can only be given in well-regulated medical centers, Buprenorphine can be prescribed and dispensed in doctor's offices. The monthly cost of buprenorphine is around $300 a month for the generic version of the medication. There is also a type of buprenorphine that contains the ingredient naloxone, that is a drug which blocks the effects of opiates. A person consuming this version of the drug, also known as Suboxone, would find it more difficult to get high from opioids if they relapsed while taking the drug. It is also taken every day, and costs approximately $450 /month. Naltrexone is another med taken in opioid maintenance therapy, but unlike the other drugs mentioned it's an opioid blocker and is not an opioid. There is an option to take this drug as a monthly shot, and that is called Vivitrol. As an opioid blocker, it prevents someone from feeling high from opioids, and therefore lowers the risk associated with relapse. This daily shot costs in the range of $1000 to $1200 a month.
