Methadone is a regulated drug used in the reduction of harm associated with opiate addiction and dependency. Someone who wants to stop taking heroin or prescription pain killers can get enrolled into a methadone clinic in or near Hope where they ingest it on a daily basis to stop withdrawal, avoid cravings and basically replace their addiction with a legal medication. Many people who begin methadone maintenance remain on the drug for decades, considering withdrawing off it causes withdrawal symptoms far greater than even heroin withdrawal. Methadone is a full opioid agonist, just like heroin. However, it remains in the body longer which is why the withdrawal from it can be so harsh and last for weeks. Additionally, because methadone can remain in the body for such a long time, users may not even start experiencing withdrawal for a day or two if they stop taking it cold turkey. Methadone withdrawal is like that of other opiates, and are likened to a really bad flu and may include fever, chills, profuse sweating, nausea and vomiting, muscle and bone aches and pain, stomach cramping, acute insomnia, etc.
Methadone withdrawal can be made more comfortable and manageable in a detox facility which allow methadone clients. Some centers provide a medication assisted detox while others help the individual get off the drug without the use of controlled medications.
