Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Facilities - White Mountain, AK.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, that is available via injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a client who plans to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a rehab program in White Mountain that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you live the sober life you want.
