But different from Methadone that can only be given in highly well-regulated medical centers, Buprenorphine can be and is prescribed and dispensed in doctor's offices. The price monthly of buprenorphine is approximately just under $300 monthly for the generic of the medication. There is also a type of buprenorphine containing the drug naloxone, that is a drug which blocks the effects of opioids. Someone consuming this version of the drug, also known as Suboxone, would find it more difficult to feel high from opioids if they relapsed while taking the drug. It is also taken every day, and costs approximately $450 monthly. Naltrexone is another drug used in opioid maintenance therapy, but unlike the other medications mentioned it is an opioid blocker and is not an opioid. There is an option to take this drug as a monthly injection, which is called Vivitrol. As an opioid blocker, the drug prevents a person from getting high from opioids, and therefore lowers the risk associated with relapse. This daily shot costs anywhere from $1000 to $1200 per month.
