Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Facilities - Genoa, AR.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, that is available via injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who intends to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a rehab program in Genoa that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you build the drug-free life you want.
